Most business owners apply to their own bank, wait three weeks and take whatever comes back. Some get a no and assume that's the end of it. It rarely is. The UK has well over a hundred lenders who fund small and medium businesses, and each one has its own appetite for sectors, deal sizes and trading histories. Our job is to know which of them wants your deal this month.

What a business loan can do for you

A business loan gives you a lump sum up front, repaid in fixed monthly instalments over an agreed term. Owners use them to:

  • take on a contract that needs cash before it pays
  • hire ahead of a busy season
  • buy stock at a better price in bulk
  • refurbish or move premises
  • clear a tax bill without draining the account
  • refinance expensive debt into one cheaper payment

Secured or unsecured?

Unsecured business loans don't need property or assets as security. They are usually quicker to arrange and suit amounts from £10k to around £500k, depending on turnover and trading history. Most lenders will ask for a personal guarantee from the directors.

Secured business loans use an asset, often property, as security. That can open up larger amounts, longer terms and lower rates, which makes them a good fit for bigger projects.

We'll tell you straight which one fits, and what each lender will ask of you before you sign anything.

Is it easy to get a business loan?

It depends on who you ask. A high-street bank scores you against a narrow set of rules, and many good businesses fall outside them: a short trading history, one bad year during Covid, lumpy seasonal income, a director with a blip on their credit file.

Specialist lenders look at the real story. Your order book. Your margins. Your track record of paying suppliers. That is why a decline from one lender often turns into an offer from another. We see it every week.

Lenders will usually want to see:

  • your last 6 to 12 months of business bank statements
  • your latest filed accounts or management figures
  • an idea of what the money is for
  • details of the directors

Every application is subject to status and lender criteria, so nobody can promise an approval. What we can promise is that your application lands in front of the lenders most likely to say yes.

Business loans FAQs

What is the easiest business loan to get?

−

The one that fits your business. An unsecured loan from a lender that likes your sector and deal size will be far easier than forcing your application through a bank that doesn't. Matching you to the right lender is the whole point of a broker.

Can I get a business loan if my bank said no?

−

Often, yes. A bank decline tells you about that bank's rules, and very little about whether your business can borrow. Plenty of our clients came to us after a no.

How long does a business loan take?

−

Many decisions come back within 24 to 48 hours of a complete application. Funds can follow within days.

Will applying affect my credit score?

−

We start with the information you give us and a soft look where possible. A full credit search only happens when you choose to proceed with a specific lender.
